CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH

We have established ourselves as thought-leaders in a number of biological breeding initiatives across China and worldwide, creating a leading breeding center for whales, pinnipeds and penguins, in addition to an artificial rearing center for polar bears. Over the past few years, we have successfully bred more than 10 different species of marine animal and hundreds of marine organisms to include emperor penguins, king penguins, gentoo penguins, rockhopper penguins, polar bears, South American sea lions, California sea lions, fur sea lions, harbour seals, (pseudorca crassidens) false killer whales, bottlenose dolphins and five species of sharks. We were also the first institute that successfully bred Rockhopper penguins and (pseudorca crassidens) false killer whales nationwide.

We have entered into animal conservation partnerships with leading research institutions and aquariums globally, signing strategic cooperation agreements with Spain Parques Reunidos, Berlin Zoological Garden, Hong Kong Ocean Park, Hualien Farglory Ocean Park of Taiwan, as well as continuing to strengthen mutual cooperation and support with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other research institutions. We also maintain close contact with foreign aquariums and marine theme parks, including SeaWorld San Diego in the U.S., LБ─≥Aquц═rium de Barcelona in Б─▀Б─▀Spain, and Wakayama Adventure World in Japan.

On October 28, 2011, representing the People's Republic of ChinaБ─≥s Ministry of Agriculture, we presented three artificially bred harbour seals as gift to Hong Kong Ocean Park. It was regarded as a milestone in the exchange and cooperation in the field of aquatic wildlife protection between Mainland China and Hong Kong. It not only reflected the strength of our competence in the area of technology for breeding and transportation of marine animals, but also actively promoted the cooperation between the two parties in regards to conservation and protection of marine and polar wildlife. In addition, we have also set up several species exchanging projects with domestic and foreign animal conservation institutions, working together to protect the genetic diversity of marine life and to establish a sustainable breeding system for marine life.

We have set up a special animal research institution and plan to establish a marine animal conservation fund to support animal conservation research projects. With the latest in advanced research equipment and highly skilled staff, our research institution carries out a vast array of scientific research, including the study of marine animal health, behavior, genetics, nutrition, pharmacology, and other aspects of breeding. WeБ─≥ve published nearly one hundred research pieces on domestic and foreign study-books and journals, including: the Б─°Survey on current and historic whale breeding records in Chinese aquariumsБ─², Б─°Pulse decomposition and feature analysis on dolphin sonar signalБ─², research on Б─°Artificial treatment and migration routes of harbour sealsБ─², Б─°The application of herbal remedies on marine mammalsБ─², Б─°How to carry out the conservation of polar bears under artificial conditionsБ─², Б─°The integration of breeding and training of bottlenose dolphins and sickle fin dolphinsБ─², Б─°From ugly duckling to white swan: emperor penguins PennaБ─≥s storyБ─², Б─°The breeding of South American sea lions under artificial conditionsБ─², Б─°The breeding of emperor penguins under artificial conditionsБ─², Б─°The breeding of sea otter under artificial conditionsБ─² and so on.

We highly support national marine and polar research and conservation activities, sponsoring the National Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Association, and launching a nationwide Б─°Haichang Aquatic Wildlife Protection AwardБ─² as a mark of recognition for advocacy, advanced character and outstanding deeds in aquatic wildlife conservation work. We believe that our long-lasting care for animal welfare and protection will continue to help us nurture and protect our valuable marine- wildlife. At the same time, we will further deepen public awareness of the natural world, marine-polar animals, and the relevant associated environmental and social issues.
